Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short At CSU

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jack Chambers accounted for 357 yards and two touchdowns, and Charleston Southern held off visiting Campbell 27-14 on Saturday at Buccaneer Field.

The Buccaneers moved to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in Big South games, while Campbell fell to 3-5 on the year and 2-3 in conference outings.

Entering the fourth quarter facing a 20-0 deficit, Campbell clawed back with a pair of Bryant Barr scores. Barr put CU on the board on the fourth play of the fourth quarter, a nine yard TD pass from Wiley Hartley.

On its next possession, Campbell marched 71 yards on 14 plays, using 6:07 of clock, ending in a Barr one yard run up the middle, cutting the score to 20-14 with 6:18 to play.

After a CSU 3-and-out, the Camels’ drive stalled in Buccaneer territory, turning the ball over on downs before Chambers gave Charleston Southern an insurance score with a 55 yard touchdown run with 1:15 on the clock to make it 27-14.

Chambers rushed for 102 yards and a TD on eight carries, while completing 34-of-48 passes for 255 yards and two more touchdowns. Cayden Jordan hauled in nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown, while JD Moore added 74 yards rushing.

Garrett Sayegh totaled a game-high 16 tackles for the Bucs with two forced fumbles and an interception. Shaundre Mims registered 1.5 sacks and Dominic Pagano forced a fumble with three tackles in the win.

Charleston Southern converted 12-of-19 third downs while outgaining the Camels 177-49 on the ground, averaging 6.6 yards per rush.

Barr scored both of Campbell’s touchdowns, one on the ground and one receiving, rushing for a team-high 29 yards with three catches for 17 yards. Hartley completed 28-of-45 passes for 275 yards and a TD with two interceptions.

Caleb Snead caught 10 passes, tying his owns school record for the third time in his career, for 98 yards, while Jalen Kelsey picked up a season-high 90 yards on six grabs.

Darion Slade led CU with eight tackles, including 2.0 stops for loss with an interception, while Brevin Allen posted 3.0 tackles for loss, making six total tackles.

Campbell will step outside of Big South play at top-10 ranked James Madison on November 6. The Camels will return to Barker-Lane Stadium for their 2021 home finale on November 13, hosting Hampton.
