Fugitive Arrested During Routine Traffic Stop

A North Carolina man wanted on fugitive warrants in South Carolina was arrested near Benson after being pulled over for a tail light violation.  A SAFE Team deputy with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office was on routine patrol around 10:00PM Saturday on Highway 50 about five miles south of Benson and stopped a 2006 Range Rover.

The deputy said a drug K-9 alerted on the vehicle. During a search 29 grams of heroin, along with crack cocaine, methamphetamines and drug paraphernalia were allegedly found.  Officers also seized a large undisclosed amount of cash found in the vehicle.

A routine background check identified the driver, 49 year-old Jeff Guy Turner of Asheville, NC, as being a wanted person from South Carolina on felony drug warrants.  Turner was held without bail on the fugitive drug warrants pending extradition to South Carolina.

Turner was given an additional $1.2 million bond for drug trafficking charges stemming from the vehicle stop near Benson.  Officers also seized the Range Rover he was driving.
