SMITHFIELD – A Johnston County Grand Jury has returned a True Bill of Indictment against Shawn Christopher Marshall for the stabbing of two people, including a Smithfield police officer.
Marshall, age 20, of 301 S. Seventh Street, Smithfield was indicted on one count of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
On May 24th around 8:53am, Officer A.E. Watts was dispatched to 301 S. Seventh Street for an active disturbance. When he arrived, Officer Watts reportedly saw Marshall engaged in an altercation with Curtis Stratharn who was being stabbed.
Officer Watts immediately intervened and was stabbed in the upper inside left arm.
Marshall was detained at the scene. He has been in the Johnston County Jail since the incident being held under a $150,000 secured bond.
Officer Watts, who was recently named the 2021 Police Officer of the Year, has returned to work.
