Smithfield Police arrested two people and seized a pistol after locating a suspicious vehicle inside Smithfield Community Park.
Police Captain R. Sheppard said an officer was on routine patrol around 11:35pm Friday and located a car with four people inside at the Community Park, which had already closed for the evening. After approaching the car the officer said he detected an odor of marijuana. During a search of the car, a 40 caliber handgun, 3 bullets and one spent casing were located.
One of the occupants, Malin Jacon Shuman, 21, of Outwater Ridge Drive, Garner reportedly admitted the gun belonged to him. Shuman was arrested for possession of a firearm by a felon. He was given a $25,000 bond.
A second person in the car, Jesus Abreu, 24, of Winston Circle, Selma was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Abreau was given a $250 bond.
Two others in the vehicle were released without charges.
