Gunman Apprehended Following Robbery

SMITHFIELD – An armed man was arrested Tuesday afternoon following a robbery at a Smithfield auto repair shop.  Just before 5:00pm, police were called to the business at the corner of Brogden Road and South Fifth Street.

Police said the suspect entered the garage, approached an individual, and stole cash and the victim’s cell phone.   The suspect fled on foot and the victim began chasing him.

Smithfield and Four Oaks Police were tracking the suspect with their K-9’s when he emerged on the railroad tracks.  Emanuel Hernandez, 19, of Smithfield was immediately taken into custody. During a search, a small amount of suspected marijuana was found in his sock.

There were no injuries reported but police said Hernandez had numerous scratches from running through the briars.

Hernandez was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping and possession of a controlled substance. He was confined in the Johnston County Jail on a $250,000 secured bond.
