Harnett Commissioners Designate September 26 As Gold Star Mother’s & Family’s Day

Harnett County Board of Commissioners plans to honor Gold Star Mothers and Families by designating September 26 as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day in Harnett County.

On June 23, 1936, a joint congressional resolution designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day to honor the mothers who have lost a child, spouse, parent, sibling or other loved one during active service in the United States Armed Forces.  In 2011, a Presidential Proclamation amended this day to Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day to honor all family members who have lost a loved one during active service.

“These families are a vital part of our country’s military community and history,” stated Harnett County Board of Commissioners Chairman Brooks Matthews. “Our Board recognizes and honors the valor, courage, and heroism of those who have fought for this nation as well as the mothers and families that have lost a loved one in the defense of the freedom of the people of the United States.”

County Commissioners will honor Gold Star Mothers and Families at 6:00 PM during the Monday, September 20 Harnett County Board of Commissioners meeting, held at the Harnett County Resource Center & Library, located at 455 McKinney Parkway in Lillington. All Gold Star Mothers and Family members are encouraged to attend.

On September 26, residents are encouraged to observe and honor this day by performing acts of service and good will in the community, sharing the stories and offering support to members of the gold star family, and celebrating families in which loved ones have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the freedoms, safety, and security.
