A Four Oaks couple was arrested at a Johnston County Sheriff’s Office SAFE Team license checkpoint. SAFE Team officers were conducting a checkpoint on Highway 96 South at Mamie Road outside of Benson on Saturday night when a car approached.
According to reports, the two occupants appeared nervous and suspecting suspicious activity the deputy asked the driver to pull to the side of the road. While pulling onto the shoulder, the officer allegedly saw the passenger toss something from the vehicle. A Sheriff K-9 quickly found drug paraphernalia on the ground. During a search of the car, additional drug paraphernalia was located.
The driver, Mellie Gene Barbour III, 24, and the passenger, Frances Ashlee Stowe, 27, of the 1400 block of Oliver’s Grove Road were arrested.
Barbour was charged with driving on a revoked license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Stowe, who reportedly attempted to pull away from the officer, was charged with resisting a public officer and possession of drug paraphernalia. While being booked into the county jail, 3 grams of heroin was located in her bra. Stowe was subsequently charged with felony possession of heroin and felony possession of a controlled substance in jail.
Barbour was given a $500 bond. Stowe was held under a $30,000 bond.
