SMITHFIELD – A motorcyclist was seriously injured after police said he was struck by a suspected impaired driver. The hit and run motorist reportedly fled from the scene but was later found at his South Smithfield home.
At 8:00pm Saturday, April 2nd, Smithfield Police were dispatched to an accident on N. Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301) at Hospital Road. Officers said Tyler Lane Jones, 27, of Thompson Road, Four Oaks was traveling southbound on Brightleaf Boulevard on his 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle when a black Cadillac Escalade traveling northbound, failed to yield while making a turn onto Hospital Road.
The Cadillac fled from the scene however an eyewitness was able to give police a possible license plate number.
EMS transported Mr. Jones to Wake Med for treatment of his injuries.
Officers said they located the suspected hit and run driver, Errol Joseph Mitchell, age 54, of W. Wilson Street, Smithfield at his residence. He was taken into custody at 9:14pm. Police Chief Keith Powell said Mitchell blew 0.19 twice on the intoxilyzer. The legal limit is 0.08 in NC.
Mitchell was charged with driving while impaired, felony hit and run causing injury, and driving on a revoked license. He was given a $50,000 bond. The 2017 Cadillac was impounded by police.
