Home Repair Contractor Accused Of Defrauding Customer

A home repair contractor has been arrested after authorities said he defrauded a customer out of their money.

Jerry Wayne Barker Jr. 31, of Mebane, NC was arrested Monday by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and charged with obtaining property by false pretenses, a felony.

The victim, a 45 year-old Kenly man, said he contacted Barker in September 2019 to replace a leaking roof at a home he owned near Wilson’s Mills.  Barker looked at the job and agreed to do the work immediately.  The victim said he paid Barker $2,750 as a down payment for the new roof.    When he didn’t show back up after several days, the victim called the contractor who reportedly told him he would look into why his crew had not already started on the job.  The victim said he never heard back from Barker and was unable to reach him after multiple attempts over the next several weeks.

The homeowner contacted the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office on October 21, 2019 and reported the incident. Following an investigation, deputies obtained warrants against Barker. He was given a $10,000 bond on the charge.

At last report, the victim is still out the $2,750 they gave Barker last September as a down payment.
