Homeless Man Linked To Sexual Assault At Johnston Health

SMITHFIELD – Police detectives have arrested a homeless man for the alleged sexual assault of a female juvenile. According to Smithfield Police the assault occurred last week on the campus of Johnston Health in Smithfield.

Police were dispatched to the hospital at 509 N. Brightleaf Boulevard on September 2nd around 9:00pm.  Police said the assault occurred at the hospital but would not release specific details on the exact location or whether the victim or suspect was a patient.

The suspect, 35 year-old Robert Wayne Gravely II, was still on the scene when officers arrived.  Gravely was taken into custody and later charged with felony statutory sex offense with a child by an adult and felony indecent liberties with a child.  Police would not release the victim’s age but indicated she was under age 18.

Gravely, whose arrest report listed as homeless, was held in the Johnston County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

In a statement to Johnston County Report the hospital said, “Johnston Health is cooperating with Smithfield Police in their investigation. The safety and welfare of our patients and staff is our top priority.”
