Homeowner Will Not Face Charges For Shooting At Thieves

No charges will be filed against a 60 year-old Selma man who fired multiple times at two men he caught stealing items from his home.

Around 8:30am Friday,  Johnston County deputies responded to a report of a shooting on Homestead Drive off Live Oak Church Road.

Deputies said the victim had used HVAC parts stored on his property and he had been the victim of prior thefts.  Friday morning, the owner reportedly caught two men loaded his property into their vehicle.  The victim opened fire with a gun. Both suspects fled into a wooded area.

A sheriff’s K-9 was brought to the scene and tracked both suspects until they were located.   Neither suspect was hit by the gunfire.

Christopher Jerelle Currie, 27, of S. Raiford Street, Selma was charged with three thefts at the victims home.  Derek Treymayne McEachin, 33, of Massey Street, Smithfield was charged with Friday’s incident only.

Officers allege that Currie confessed to the crimes.  He was given a $16,000 bond. McEachin was released on a $500 bond.

After consulting with the Johnston County District Attorney, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday the 60 year-old homeowner would not face any criminal charges for shooting at the suspects.
