Impaired Driver Attempts To Outrun Deputies, JCSO Says

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) arrested a Four Oaks man after he led SAFE Team deputies on a brief pursuit on his van.

Around 6:30pm Saturday, deputies said they attempted to stop 38 year-old Leslie Paul Brewington on Woods Crossroads Road outside of Benson for speeding.  Brewington reportedly failed to pull over and reached speeds up to 80 miles per hour while trying to elude arrest.  During the pursuit the driver reportedly tossed items out of the vehicle.

Other officers were able to deploy stop sticks on Highway 96 near Blackmon’s Crossroads and deflate his tires.  The chase ended when Brewington stopped in the parking lot of a business at Blackmon’s Crossroads on Highway 96 at Strickland’s Crossroads Road.

The suspect reportedly told officers he didn’t pull over because he was drunk. He also admitted to tossing a liquor bottle and pipe from the van during the chase.

Brewington, of the 6000 block of Devil’s Racetrack Road, was charged with fleeing to elude arrest, driving while impaired, speeding, reckless driving, having an open container of alcohol, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana paraphernalia and littering. His van was also seized.

Bail was set at $17,500.
