A highly intoxicated burglary suspect was captured inside a Smithfield business Thursday.
Around 7:00am, Johnston County deputies responded to a burglar alarm call at Best Auto Body Shop at 2934 US Highway 70 East. Officers arrived and reportedly found the suspect, 36 year-old Michael Matthew Ball of Browns Mill, New Jersey still at the scene and heavily under the influence.
Ball reportedly told officers he thought he was in New Jersey and had no idea he was in North Carolina.
Deputies said Ball entered the business, broke out several windows, ripped the burglar alarm panel from the wall and ransacked the office area. Damage to the business was estimated at $2,700. A shovel was apparently removed by the suspect.
Ball was charged with breaking and entering, larceny, and injury to property. He was confined in the Johnston County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
