The largest pet-friendly and pet-centric event in the area returns to Benson’s Singing Grove Saturday, April 17th after a year’s pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nearly 50 vendors in tents or with booths spaced apart to accommodate social-distancing will be at Jade’s Jam offering pet adoptions, pet supplies, treats, information on animal rescues, arts and crafts and more.
All families and fur babies are welcome to attend, but all animals must be on a non-retractable leash, according to event organizer Corinne Coats with Project Jade.
The six-year-old event was named in memory of Coats’ dog named Jade who was struck and killed by a motorist and left to die. Coats rushed to her aid.
“I will never forget that day, Jan. 18, 2005 at 7:21 a.m., I put my 70 pound baby girl in the back of my car, flew to nowhere because no one was open,” Coats shared in a sign at the 2019 event.
She started calling veterinarians and found one willing to meet her at the office before it opened. Four hours of praying and $800 later, Jade died, leaving her mother behind with a passion to help other animals in her name. Project Jade was born to provide help to animals in need. And Jade’s Jam gives them a chance to shine.
Adoptable pets will walk a red carpet and stay on scene for petting and adoptions.
“We definitely want to bring awareness to adopt don’t shop and responsible pet ownership,” Coats said. “It takes more than a dog house in the backyard to be a good pet owner.” This year’s event will feature adoption opportunities and helpful information from eight animal rescue groups: Paw Project, Puffy’s Rescue, JCAPL (Johnston County Animal Protection League), Roar, Project Jade, Abandon Love Animal Rescue, Freedom German Shepherd Rescues and Daun’s Wildlife Rescue and Rehab. Treats will be available for humans and their four-legged friends.
Bring lawn chairs to listen to live music or an appetite for food truck cuisine from the Redneck BBQ Lab, DD&J Old Fashioned Kettle Korn, Paradise Italian Ice, Wake the Truck Up and Xquisito Foods.
Admission is free. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Benson’s Singing Grove, 400 E. Main St.
Jade’s Jam is held to bring awareness and knowledge to the community about animal welfare issues, animal cruelty issues and also to promote responsible pet ownership.
