JCATS Bus Struck By Hit And Run Driver

Police are investigating a hit and run accident involving a JCATS bus in Downtown Smithfield.  The collision was reported at 11:33am Jan. 20th on Market Street near Fifth Street.

Officers said Kimberly Adams Ellis of Smithfield was operating a 2019 Ford JCATS bus eastbound on Market Street (US 70) at the posted speed limit of 25mph when the bus was struck from behind by a white Chevy Silverado pickup.  After the collision the Silverado driver sped away from the scene.

There were no passengers on the bus. Ellis was not injured.

Damage to the bus was estimated at $4,000. Police are still searching for the hit and run vehicle. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information about the suspect vehicle, which should have significant front end damage, is asked to contact the Smithfield Police Department at 919-934-2121 or the Tip Line at 919-989-8835.
