Johnston County Mayor Suddenly Resigns

A Johnston County mayor submitted his resignation Monday, hours before the start of a regularly scheduled council meeting. First term Wilson’s Mills Mayor Jim Uzzle Jr. resigned without giving any public explanation. Uzzle reportedly left his resignation letter Monday morning at the Wilson’s Mills Town Hall. The letter was read during Monday night’s meeting and accepted by the town board.

The two-sentence letter was written to Town Administrator Leighanna Worley and stated, “It is with a saddened heart that I must submit my resignation from the Office of Mayor of Wilson’s Mills, NC effective immediately. I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors with the Town.”

Afterwards, Councilman Philip Wright, who previously served as town mayor, was appointed the new mayor and will fill out the unexpired term ending in 2021.

Reached by telephone today (Tuesday), Mr. Uzzle said there was nothing wrong and he had no comment to make. He stated the Town was in good hands and everyone was doing a good job. He declined to say why he resigned.

Uzzle was elected in November 2017. Previously, he served on the Wilson’s Mills Planning Board. He is a founding member of the Wilson’s Mills Fire Department and previously fire chief. He also served two-terms as PTA President for Wilson’s Mills Elementary School and served as Vice President of the Johnston County Homebuilders Association.

Wright, the newly appointed mayor, said today he had not spoken to Mr. Uzzle and had no idea why he suddenly resigned. “I haven’t heard any major complaints.”

Unless it’s medical.. it’s very suspicious to say the least.. but obviously he’s doing the town a favor by bowing out.. You don’t really owe explaination , but the folks that backed you deserve it wouldn’t you say?
