Landlord Finds Man Sleeping In Vacant Apartment

A Smithfield landlord was surprised to find a man sleeping in an apartment that was supposed to be vacant.  Smithfield Police were summoned around 11:00AM Friday to the apartment on E. Market Street.

Police Captain R. Sheppard said the tenant had been previously evicted by the landlord.  However, the former tenant had reportedly allowed Howard Antonio Washington, 24, of Smithfield to sleep in the apartment while she was at work, even though she had been evicted.  When the landlord arrived and found Washington sleeping in the apartment he called police.

Washington was charged with breaking and entering. He was released on a $2,000 bond pending a Dec. 12th, 2019 court appearance on the misdemeanor charge.
