An alert Johnston County deputy sheriff serving a civil paper helped Smithfield Police make a major drug bust Tuesday night.
The deputy was at 509 Mill Street in East Smithfield serving a civil paper and detected a very strong odor of marijuana coming from the home. No one would come to the door so police officers obtained a search warrant to enter the residence.
During the search, approximately 1.7 pounds of marijuana was located along with $2,178 in cash, a pistol, two cell phones, and a NC Crimes Book commonly used by law enforcement officers and prosecutors to show the elements of criminal offenses.
Two men, Renard Ray Dawon Padgett, 28, of Landover Lane, Four Oaks and Shanquan Dakell Padgett, 26, of Lizzie Mill Road, Selma were charged with maintaining a dwelling for a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Renard Padgett was also charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana.
Authorities did not say if the two men were related. Both were confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $25,000 bond each.
