Law Enforcement K-9 Assaulted By Suspect

A Johnston County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was assaulted by a suspect who had jumped and run from a traffic stop.  A deputy had stopped a car for a traffic violation around 8:30pm Saturday in the 13000 block of Highway 50 North.

During the traffic stop, the officers reportedly found suspected narcotics on the driver, who was suspected of being under the influence. After the officer asked the driver to step out of the car, the man identified as Yoni Alexander Brizuela, 26, of Swift Creek Road, Smithfield, fled on foot.

A second officer arrived with a K-9 and began tracking the suspect in a wooded area. The K-9 “Pinto” located Brizeula a short time later. Before he could be detained by the officers he hit and kicked Pinto.

Brizeula is facing numerous charges including assault on a law enforcement animal, possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for a controlled substance, resisting arrest, driving on a revoked license and driving while impaired.  He was also wanted on 7 counts of failing to appear in court this year on charges ranging from violating a domestic violence protective order, assault on a female, and driving while impaired.

He was confined in the Johnston County Jail under a $82,000 bond.
