A lengthy investigation by Johnston County authorities has led to the arrest of a former caretaker accused of embezzling $34,900 from a disabled man.
Detectives with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said the incidents date back to February 2018.
Melanie Ann McKinney, 33, now lives in Clinton but was formerly a neighbor of the victim last year when she lived in the Bentonville community south of Four Oaks. McKinney reportedly began providing caretaking responsibilities for the 59 year-old man and later became his power of attorney.
The victim was admitted to a mental health facility in Butner, NC last year. While the victim was in the facility, McKinney allegedly accessed his bank account and embezzled $34,900. Afterwards, she converted the money to her own personal use.
McKinney was indicted this month by a Johnston County Grand Jury and charged with 5 counts of embezzlement and one count of exploiting the disabled/elderly.
