Lost Wallet Leads To Criminal Charges Against Smithfield Couple

A Smithfield couple was arrested Monday by Smithfield Police, hours after a customer lost their wallet in the parking lot of a local pharmacy.

Around 1:30pm, the 44 year-old victim went to Realo Pharmacy at 601 North 8th Street.  The victim accidentally dropped his wallet in the parking lot.  When he discovered it missing a few hours later he called police. He told officers his wallet contained about $1,200 in cash.

Police responded to the pharmacy and reviewed footage from a nearby video camera. The video allegedly showed an individual locate the wallet in the parking lot, pick it up and walk away.  The officer recognized the individual and responded to their home on North 7th Street.

Steven Douglas Morton, 57, allegedly admitted to spending some of the money found in the wallet. Police did recover $376 in cash and returned it to the victim.

Police also said they found three counterfeit $100 bills in the home.

Morton and Mary Ann Turner, 54, of the same address, were both charged with felony larceny and felony possession of counterfeit money.  Both were given $12,500 bonds.
