Man Accused Of Killing Neighbor’s Cat With Pellet Gun

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man for allegedly shooting and killing his neighbor’s cat with a pellet gun.

The incident was reported Saturday night at 11:27pm in the 1300 block of Princeton-Kenly Road near Kenly.

JoCoReport has learned 58 year-old John Daniel Spivey of Princeton-Kenly Road, Kenly was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty following the incident.

Deputies said they responded to the scene after a 63 year-old woman said she heard her cat in distress. She looked outside and saw her cat running from near the roadway to her back yard.  She immediately went to check on her cat and found it dead.  It had a bloody wound to the head.  She reportedly told officers she saw Spivey standing nearby with a pellet gun.

Spivey allegedly told deputies he saw the cat walk past his home. He said he shot towards the cat but did not mean to hit the animal, stating there were lots of stray cats in the area.

Spivey was booked into the Johnston County Jail early Sunday morning under a $30,000 bond.  Deputies also seized a Daisy BB gun from Spivey as evidence in the case.
