Man Accused Of Selling Equipment He Reported Stolen

A Johnston County man was arrested Tuesday on obtaining property by false pretense charges.

On March 8th, Thomas Ellis Barnhill of the 14000 block of Highway 210, Angier allegedly reported to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office a Takeuchi skid steer and equipment trailer that he owned had been stolen from a location in the 200 block of Surles Road near Benson.  Barnhill said the theft occurred between March 4th and 5th.

Detectives determined a GPS tracking device on the skid steer had been turned off prior to the alleged theft. When the GPS was reactivated, it was tracked to a location in Franklinton, NC.  Law enforcement went to the address and discovered the skid steer had allegedly been sold to them by Barnhill for $10,000.

The skid steer, valued at $54,000 was recovered and returned to a finance company. The equipment trailer, valued at $4,500, has still not been located.

Barnhill, 36, was held Tuesday under a $20,000 bond.
