A Johnston County man is facing criminal charges after Johnston County deputies allege he filed a false report and then defrauded his insurance company.
On July 22nd, officers were called to a business parking lot on Highway 70 between Smithfield and Clayton. Anthony J. Mastrantonio, 31, of Grovewood Drive, Clayton told deputies a Chevy Cobalt left in the parking lot had been damaged. Mastrantonio claimed the car had damage to the paint, pry marks on the door, a car computer was stolen and the fuel line cut. The damage to the vehicle was estimated at $800 and the stolen car computer was valued at $600.
Deputies later learned the vehicle did not belong to Mastrantonio and was owned by his ex-girlfriend. The woman reportedly told officers the car had been broken down in the parking lot 5 or 6 months and it had not been vandalized.
On August 24th, Mastrantonio was charged with insurance fraud, obtaining property by false pretense, and filing a false police report.
