Man Charged With Throwing Package Over Prison Fence

Criminal charges have been filed against a man that authorities say threw a package over the barbed wire fence at Johnston Correctional Institute on Highway 70 near Smithfield on Thursday.

Around 10:30am, an eyewitness called 911 after seeing a vehicle pull up to the prison fence, a person get out of the car then toss a package over the fence.

The vehicle was stopped a short distance away from the prison by Johnston County deputies and Wilson’s Mills Police.

Christopher Lee Minchew, 37, of Big Daddys’ Road, Pikeville allegedly confessed to throwing the package containing tobacco products.

Minchew was charged with providing tobacco to an inmate and conspiracy.  Both offenses are misdemeanors. Minchew was transported to the Johnston County Jail where he found himself behind bars under a $5,000 bond.
