DUNN – A Hope Mills man died late Monday night after an early Saturday morning accident at a warehouse serving Food Lion near Dunn.
Dereck Rafael Carrero, 22, suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a high-reach motorized forklift driven by another employee, according to the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.
Carrero was walking down an aisle selecting items for an order when the incident occurred, according to company officials. The Harnett County 911 Communications Center received a call on the incident shortly after 2 a.m.
Carrero suffered a serious head injury and was transported to Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn before being transferred to WakeMed where he succumbed to his injuries, the sheriff’s office said.
The incident is being treated as an accident and is currently under investigation by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.
The warehouse is operated by ADUSA Supply Chain, for Food Lion. Company spokesperson Christie Phillips-Brown provided The Daily Record with an updated statement on the tragedy.
“ADUSA Distribution expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and co-workers of our associate who was involved a tragic accident early Saturday morning at our Dunn, NC distribution facility,” the company said in the statement. “We deeply regret this accident occurred and our thoughts remain with his family during this difficult time.”
The company opted not to provide any further details regarding the incident.
“ADUSA Distribution continues to investigate the incident and is cooperating with other investigative authorities,” the company said. “Because the situation remains under investigation and out of respect to the family, we have no additional details to share at this time.”
