Man Drowns While Fishing In Johnston County Pond

Emergency crews search a pond on Tarheel Road near Benson for a drowning victim.

BENSON – A man drowned while fishing at a Johnston County pond. It happened at a pond on Tarheel Road off Highway 242 North of Benson shortly before noon Thursday.

The victim was fishing in a boat with a friend when he fell into the water. The friend was unable to save the man from drowning.

The victim was located by emergency personnel a short time after they arrived. His name was not immediately released.

The Elevation Fire Department, Four Oaks Fire Department, Princeton Fire Department Dive Team, Johnston County EMS, Johnston County Emergency Management and Johnston County Sheriff’s Office responded.

  1. Sad it happened. Let it be a reminder to all to wear life preservers if you are a child, elderly or have trouble swimming. Even a good young swimmer can get caught up in debris such as old fishing lines and tree branches hidden under water.
