Man Shot While Riding ATV On Highway

A 27 year-old man was seriously injured after being shot while riding his all terrain vehicle (ATV) on the highway Saturday night.   A 75 year-old suspect has now been charged with the shooting.

Law enforcement officers and paramedics responded to a shooting call around 9:40pm Saturday on Old Creech Road outside of Selma.  According to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Lacy Douglas Hocutt of Goldsboro was riding an ATV on the state maintained dirt road.  The noise from the ATV reportedly startled cows in a nearby pasture, that belonged to the suspect, Jerry James Rhodes of Old Creech Road.

Rhodes reportedly fired one shot at Hocutt as he passed on the ATV but missed.  Hocutt reportedly did not realize Rhodes had fired a gun. When he drove by a second time, Rhodes fired again, this time striking Hocutt in the back as he was riding by on the ATV, according to authorities.

Hocutt was rushed by ambulance to Wake Medical Center for a serious gunshot wound. At last report he was in stable condition.

Rhodes was charged by Johnston County deputies with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
