BENSON – A Dunn man was jailed Friday, Sept. 4, after an alleged foiled attempt at stealing from Carlie C’s in Benson using the store’s motorized cart, then brandishing a knife.
Thomas David Poole, 61, of Dakota Lane was charged with one count of robbery with a deadly weapon after he was caught sitting on items he intended to steal, according to Benson police.
The reported items included three cans of bug spray, three packages of barbecue, a can of disinfectant and a can opener.
The manager of the store, and several other employees, noticed Poole trying to leave the store on an electric shopping cart belonging to Carlie C’s with the items totaling just over $37, it was reported. The manager approached Poole and gave him the chance to either pay for the items or leave them. Instead, he pulled a pocket knife out, waved it around and threatened the manager, police said.
When officers arrived, the manager identified Poole, who was walking to a car in the parking lot.
He was taken into custody without incident. When asked, Poole told the arresting officer he didn’t intend to use the knife.
Poole was taken to the Johnston County Jail and booked on a $50,000 secured bond. He was also banned from entering the store again.
