Man Who Stole $2.39 Beer Held On Felony Charge

SMITHFIELD –  A homeless man was arrested after he allegedly shoplifted a $2.39 can of beer from the Circle K convenience store at 1137 N. Brightleaf Boulevard.  Smithfield Police responded to the shoplifting call at 6:15pm Friday.

Officers said the suspect, 57 year-old Ricky Nelson Ross, had already left the business. He was located near the entrance to Walmart and taken into custody.  While at the Johnston County Jail, Ross allegedly tried to assault a jailor.  Due to concern about his high level of impairment he was transported to Johnston Health in Smithfield for observation. While undergoing medical treatment, Ross allegedly tried to cause a disturbance with Emergency Department staff.

Ross was later released from the hospital and transported back to the Johnston County Jail.  Due to numerous previous larceny arrests, Ross was charged with habitual larceny, a felony.  He was also charged with misdemeanor larceny. He was confined in jail on a $10,000 secured bond.

No injuries were reported to police, jail employees or hospital staff.
