NASHVILLE, NC – A mother and her boyfriend are facing criminal charges after her two children overdosed. One of the children later died in the hospital.
The Nashville Police Department said the incident happened September 7th at 9:36pm. First responders arrived at a home on Richardson Court and began CPR on both a 1 year-old and 4 year-old. Both children were rushed to Nash UNC Hospital for treatment and later transferred to Vidant Hospital in Greenville.
Police said Oxycodone was left on the bed within reach of both children and they accidentally ingested the drugs.
On September 9th, the 1 year-old child died in the hospital. The 4 year-old remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The mother, Jorese Howard, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and possession of a controlled substance. She is being held on a $260,000 secured bond at the Nash County Detention Center.
Her boyfriend, Kameron Daekwon Harris-Brooks of Charlotte, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse and possession with intent to sell or deliver a controlled substance. He was held on a $225,000 bond.
Police said Harris-Brooks was free from custody on a $100,000 bond at the time of the incident on pending criminal charges of larceny of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
