Mother Arrested After Baby Is Severely Burned

Criminal charges have now been filed against a mother whose 1 year-old daughter was severely burned by hot bath water in a Smithfield motel room in 2018.

Last November 20th, WTSB Radio and JoCoReport first told you about an incident at the Village Motor Lodge at 198 Mallard Road.

Around 12:41pm that day, paramedics and first responders rushed to a room at the motel after the young child was severely burned from the neck down in a bathtub. The baby was rushed to the Burn Center at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for serious burns.

Smithfield Police announced Tuesday the child’s mother, 28 year-old Khristina Marie Gaylor, has been charged with felony child abuse resulting in serious injury.   Gaylor was already in the Harnett County Jail on shoplifting charges when the arrest warrant was served.  Gaylor has addresses in both Smithfield and Coats.

Police said the child is still recovering from severe burns on the majority of her body.  The Department of Social Services is also involved in the case.  Police did not say who currently has custody of the child while the mother is in jail.
