Mother Stole Her Child’s Identity, Report Says

BENSON – Investigators have arrested 44 year-old Shannon Marie Burnette of Erwin following an identity theft investigation. On March 9, 2022, a 27 year-old Benson man reported his identity was stolen and used to open four different credit card accounts.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office began investigating and obtained video surveillance from a location one of the credit card transactions took place. The victim’s own mother was allegedly identified as the suspect.

Burnette reportedly used her son’s personal information to open the credit cards accounts. During at least one transaction, she purchased items for her grandchildren, the victim’s own children. A total dollar amount of the charges made on the four credit cards was not available.

Burnette was arrested April 28 on identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense warrants. She was given a $35,000 secured bond.
