Murder, Arson Arrest Made In Fatal Fire

An arrest has been made in a fatal mobile home fire Tuesday morning in Nash County.

Flames destroyed a singlewide mobile home at 7515 Strickland Road near Bailey.  After the flames were extinguished, authorities found the body of 59 year-old Marcelino Ponce-Gonzales in a bedroom.  His body was sent to the medical examiner’s office in Greenville for an autopsy to determine how he died.

Wednesday morning, the Nash County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of 32 year-old Alayna Renee Sherrod of the same address.  Sherrod was charged with first degree murder and first degree arson.  She was booked into the Nash County Detention Center and received no bond. Her first court appearance is set for Thursday.

Officials said Sherrod and Ponce-Gonzales shared the home but were not in a relationship.  Authorities have not been able to identify a motive.
