New Details Released In Deadly Head-On Crash

ANGIER – An accident report released by the State Highway Patrol provides new details about last month’s head-on crash in southwestern Johnston County that killed both drivers. The collision occurred just after midnight on April 26th on Old Fairground Road northeast of Massengill Pond Road.

Emanuel Augusta Shelton, 20, of McGee Road, Benson was traveling southbound in black 2018 Honda when his vehicle was hit head on by a northbound silver 2018 Kia driven by Kenneth Dale Beasley Jr., 38, of Hobson Road, Dunn. After the impact the Kia caught fire and burned. The Honda came to rest partially on top of a concrete bridge barrier.

According to the report, Beasley was traveling 70 mph in a 50 mph zone when he crossed the centerline and reportedly caused the wreck. Shelton was traveling at the posted speed limit of 50 mph. There were no tire impressions or skid marks prior to impact. After the collision, the Honda came to rest 30 feet from the point of impact. The Kia traveled 47 feet before it stopped.

Shelton was not wearing a seat belt. Officers could not determine if Beasley was restrained.

Toxicology results are pending.
