New Rand/U.S. 70 Work Nearing Completion

Improvements Funded by 2013 Bond Program

GARNER – Construction on the New Rand Road/Garner Road sidewalks project is entering its final few weeks, with all storm drainage and underground utility work now substantially complete.

The Garner Road section, including new curb and gutter and sidewalk, is complete from Garner Senior Center to New Rand Road, and sidewalks were also installed through the New Rand Road/NCRR railroad crossing.

The contractor, Moffat Pipe, is currently working at the U.S. 70 intersection of New Rand Road. Curb and gutter and widening are completed along the southern section of New Rand Road, and the new U.S. 70 eastbound right-turn lane is complete. The contractor is currently working this week to complete the U.S. 70 westbound right-turn lane.

The new U.S. 70 westbound right-turn lane will have improved curb and gutter.

In the coming week, New Rand Road will be brought up to final grade by installing about a foot of asphalt wedging on each side of U.S. 70. This will greatly improve visibility and safety at this busy intersection.

Then the final lift of asphalt paving for the entire corridor will begin, including pedestrian islands, final pavement markings, traffic signage and final switchover to the new traffic and pedestrian signals.

The contractor will then work to complete seeding and mulching as well as final punch-list items as required by the Town of Garner and NCDOT. Construction is slated for completion by the end of June.
