New Report: Unvaccinated People 15 Times More Likely To Die From COVID Compared To Vaccinated People

Adult ICU Patients Hit Record Highs for the Pandemic

RALEIGH – The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has released new data in the weekly respiratory surveillance report showing that unvaccinated people were 15.4 times, or 1,540 percent, more likely to die from COVID-19 during the four-week period ending Aug. 21, 2021. This comes as the state hit a pandemic high on Aug. 26 with 912 adults in the ICU with COVID-19. The number of COVID-19 patients on ventilators also reached a record high at 574.

This week’s respiratory surveillance report is the first to provide age-adjusted death rate data for COVID-19. Adjusting for age is a way to make fairer comparisons between vaccinated and unvaccinated people because the vaccinated population is older than the unvaccinated population and older people are more likely to die from COVID-19. Data is preliminary and is subject to change as additional cases and deaths are reported.

During the week ending Aug. 21, 2021, unvaccinated people were also 4.4 times, or 440 percent, more likely to catch COVID-19 than vaccinated people. The difference between vaccinated and unvaccinated teens was even greater during the week ending Aug. 21, 2021, with unvaccinated people aged 12 to 17 being 6.3 times, or 630 percent, more likely to get COVID-19 than vaccinated people in the same age group.

There is urgency to get vaccinated now. North Carolina has been experiencing the fastest acceleration in cases and hospitalizations since the pandemic started. The COVID-19 vaccines authorized and approved in the United States continue to be remarkably effective in reducing risk of severe disease, hospitalization and death, even against the widely circulating Delta variant.

“The vast majority of people dying with COVID-19 are unvaccinated. If you are not vaccinated please don’t wait until it is too late,” said Mandy K. Cohen, M.D., Secretary of the NC Department of Health and Human Services. “The authorized and approved vaccines have been through rigorous clinical trials and met scientific standards. Millions of North Carolinians have been safely vaccinated.”

There were 187 deaths among unvaccinated persons younger than 65, compared with eight deaths among vaccinated persons younger than 65 during the four-week time period. There were 215 deaths among unvaccinated persons older than 65, compared with 67 deaths among vaccinated persons older than 65. [The previous version of this release stated the number of deaths over a one-week period, which showed there were 29 deaths among unvaccinated persons younger than 65, compared with one death among vaccinated persons younger than 65, and 30 deaths among unvaccinated persons older than 65, compared with seven deaths among vaccinated persons older than 65. This has been corrected to show the number of deaths in the full four-week period used for death rate comparisons, based on case data reported through Aug. 22.]

Vaccines are widely available in North Carolina. Through Aug. 31, anyone 18 and older who gets their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at a participating location will receive a $100 Summer Card* in the form of a Prepaid Mastercard® while supplies last. To get a free vaccine near you, visit MySpot.nc.gov or call 888-675-4567. You can also text your zip code to 438829 to find vaccine locations near you.

Anyone who has symptoms of or has been exposed to COVID-19 should get tested as soon as possible. To find a testing site in your community, go to www.ncdhhs.gov/GetTested. People who are not experiencing serious symptoms should not go to the emergency department for routine COVID-19 testing. People should seek medical attention immediately for serious symptoms such as trouble breathing, persistent pain or pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, or bluish lips or face.

While vaccines are the best protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death, monoclonal antibody therapy can reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and decrease the likelihood of hospitalization, especially in high-risk patients. If you test positive for COVID-19, monoclonal antibody therapy must be administered within 10 days of your first COVID-19 symptoms, so it is crucial to get tested early.

In addition to getting vaccinated, to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect our communities, NCDHHS recommends everyone wear a mask in indoor public spaces if you live in area of high or substantial levels of transmission as defined by the CDC until more people are vaccinated and viral transmission decreases. In North Carolina, that is now all 100 counties.

  1. Don’t forget that the CDC does not consider you vaccinated until 2 weeks after your 2nd dose so those in the hospital could be having vaccine reactions, testing positive due to recent vax, but not yet 2 weeks after second dose. Don’t let the media fool you!

    • Thank you so much, Jen R, for letting us know that the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services is now a media outlet. How enlightening.

      • They are a propaganda political arm of cooper and so is the MSM so yes! Mandy Cohen is not even licensed to practice medicine in this state.

      • How come you don’t comment on the facts within my comment? You only comment about the MSM. Probably cause you haven’t researched enough to know I’m telling the truth.

Virus History tells us that as viruses mutate and create variants/strains the variant is less deadly but more virulent (spreads easier) than previous strains/variants. Interesting that this data driven virus is the first ever to have subsequent variants that are more deadly than previous variants.

Could it be the vaxxed are creating the variant? Could it be the vaxxed are the ones in the hospital but since they aren’t CDC approved “ vaxxed” we are being told it’s the unvaxxed in the hospital and dying? Could it be that the NIH/CDC protocol for treatment is killing people because they are pushing remdisivir and venting instead of HCQ and ivermectin which have been shown to be more effective? Things that make you go hmmm… and hopefully start researching!

    • More miss information Jen R. The anti body produced by the Covid-19 virus is not exactly the same as the anti body produced by the covid vaccine. This is why it can be determined if you have had the Covid-19 virus even though you may of ahead the vaccine. The vaccine does not prevent you from contracting the virus, it helps prevent you from getting as sick. The monoclonal antibody therapy uses the Covid-19 virus anti body to help treat the symptoms of the Covid-19 virus. So with that said, that is how hospitals can determine if someone has the virus or if someone is having a reaction to the vaccine.

      • You are correct in that the antibody produced by natural immunity is different than the one artificially produced by the shot. The one produced by natural immunity offers better protection against the delta variant as well as covid in general. This is why the medical community uses monoclonal antibody treatment from persons with natural immunity not vax persons.

Another positive for allowing natural immunity to occur for this virus that has a 99.7% recovery rate!

        • I just have to say good luck with that horse pill ivermectin, I’m guessing somewhere there’s someone with COVID and a parasite.

          • FYI ivermectin is a human approved medicine as well and has been used regularly for years. Just because the FDA has decided they won’t allow use of it off label for covid doesn’t mean it’s not safe for humans. As well the horse version isn’t a pill… it’s a gel! Oh and since they are now finding that the Pfizer vax have parasites in them the ivermectin will be extra helpful!

    • Jen R, as someone who works in a hospital with these patients I can tell you that these people are not false positives due to recent vaccinations. These people have not had any vaccinations. That is pure delusional and obviously wishful thinking on your part.

    • Oh now you trust trump? Interesting and convenient when the country is in shambles from this failed resident in the WH.

    • This is true but the FDA and CDC won’t allow true treatments to be used so we are stuck with a dangerous vaccine that kills more people than covid.

  2. New media pushing what they want everyone to believe. How many of the people manner no age had there first shot and waiting the second….. Where the number on this CDC.

  3. It’s not the media pushing anything as much as you’d like to believe it. Do you have family or friends who work in hospitals? Ask them about the patients in there for Covid, ask what percent of Covid patients in the ICU are vaxed or not vaxed. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s common knowledge. I have 2 family members at 2 different hospitals and a friend at a third. All 3 report the exact same situation at each of their respective hospitals. And while this fact shouldn’t matter I’ll include it anyhow – none of the 3 are registered Democrats.

Get vaccinated people. It’s one thing for us to have to walk around with masks and other inconveniences when there is a brand new virus. It’s entirely different matter when we have a vaccine yet still have to wear masks and think twice before seeing friends and family. Let’s do what it takes to move on with life.
