    Jerry Joe Stephenson, 81, died at home Tuesday, August 7 at 5am. Every day he was cared for and loved with tenderness and unending devotion of his family with the assistance of Emma, Presley and Jessica. Jerry Joe was born in Lexington, Kentucky June 5, 1937 to Hattie Mae Daniels Stephenson and Joseph Graham Stephenson. He was a 1952 graduate of Smithfield High School. He earned a BA in Business Administration from Wake Forrest College in 1960. He was proud of his Army Commission as Second Lieutenant in 1960. Hallmarks of his life were as follows: Farmer, Tobacconist, Avid Hunter, Fisherman, Golfer, Husband, Daddy and Granddaddy. There was always peace in the basics, joy in the outdoors, laughter in family faces and strong personal connections shared with friends. He was never quick with decisions and always methodical in his methods. Life was lived with passion and understanding of simple procedure. Moments and memories were more important than things. The outdoors were his sanctuary. His gift was his life & his twinkling light of mischief. He was genuine and respected. He instilled a lifetime passion for hunting and fishing in the generations to come. He was the BEST granddaddy doing all the things a little boy loved & dreamed.
    A service, celebrating Jerry Joe’s life, will take place at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018 in the First Baptist Church in Smithfield. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
    Surviving are his wife 35 years, Gloria Cooke Stephenson; children: son, Jerry Joe Stephenson, Jr. (Shannon Stephenson) and their children, Lindsey Stansbury, Madison Connaway, Natasha Towery and Dillon Stephenson; daughter, Leah Stephenson Wallace(Blake Wallace) and their sons, Wells and Joe Wallace; daughter, Beverly Hester Hardee(Jim Hardee) and their sons, Fisher and Jackson Hardee and daughter, Karen Hester Pope (Michael Pope) and their children, Joseph, Joshua and Georgia Pope.
    Family and Friends will casually gather Wednesday Evening at the home.
    The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Johnston Home Health and Hospice and asks that memorial contributions be made to them at P. O. Box 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577. The days/weeks/months of Jerry Joe’s illness were touched by these Angels on earth.
