Jesse Y. Beam, Jr. of Smithfield, NC passed away on Saturday June 16, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 92. He retired from the U.S. Navy after serving in World War II and the Korean War. He then went on to retire from the Johnston County school system after 30 years. He was extremely proud of his service in the Navy and his dedication to the school system but it was his volunteer work with Hospice that he described as a true purpose in his determination to help others. His highest calling was as a man of faith. He read his Bible daily and lived his life to reflect those principles. He had an incredible joy for life that carried down through us all. We will remember his laughter, his warmth, his many loving and humorous anecdotes, and his love for family and friends. His charismatic and charming personality meant he never met a stranger. He engaged in the lives of everyone he knew which made a difference in the lives of many. He worked very hard all of his life, taking care of his wife up until the very end. He taught all of his family the importance of humility and kindness yet he was a strong man and he remained strong up until his last breath.
Jesse is survived by his wife, Bessie Beam; grandson, Christopher Cox; son-in-law, Bobby Cox; cousin, Sue Beam; nieces, Kathy Beam and Lorie Beam; nephew, Brooks Holmes and his wife, Wendy Holmes. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Beam; and daughter, Kim Cox. A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, June 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Parrish Funeral Home, 1351 S Pollock St., Selma with a time of visitation to follow from 2:30 to 3:00. The family would like to welcome all to attend and celebrate Jesse’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Johnston Health Home Care & Hospice.
