Kure Beach – John Edward Gregory III, age 70, passed away on Monday, August 9, 2021, at Smithfield Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born, June 27, 1951, in Wilson County, John was a son of the late John Edward Gregory Jr. and Mary Eunice Gregory. After graduating from Campbell College, John worked for Olan Mills and as a freelance photographer for the News and Observer. John later specialized his talents by opening Beach Portrait Photography in Carolina and Kure Beach.
John was actively involved with the Sons of Confederate Veterans where he was a Camp Commander of Smithfield’s Light Infantry Camp #1466. John also volunteered his time to photograph special events at the N.C. State Capitol to Civil War reenactments all over the state. John also loved to travel and made numerous adventures to Mazatlán Mexico in his motorhome, as well as trips to visit friends in Florida and many of the mid-west states. He was an amateur astronomer and in 1986 captured on film a beautiful moment in time of Halley’s Comet. John would often invite his friends to the Gregory family beach cottage and show them planets and stars through his telescope. John’s passion of astronomy started at an early age, which led him later in life to one of his favorite destinations; The Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ. His trademark character trait was giving so much time to help others. Whether it was teaching apprenticeships to those interested in his profession, prison ministry, or visiting those that were sick, John unselfishly gave the precious commodity of his time.
John was a loving brother and a friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John attended Kure Beach Baptist Church and loved the occasional beachside services for members and the public. John leaves behind his sister, Susan Gregory McLaurin of Windsor along with many friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.
