Smithfield – Johnny Frederick Toole, age 73, died Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at the UNC Johnston Health of Clayton. Born June 30, 1947 in Johnston County to the late Eugene Frederick and Mary Missouri Overbee Toole, he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Wayne Toole.
Johnny was a lifelong member of Sardis Baptist Church where he has served as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent and was currently a Deacon. He was a US Army veteran and a member of the VFW, DAV and the American Legion. When his children were young, he coached R. A. Basketball for 9 years and served as an assistant Boy Scout Master for Troop 68 at Bizzell’s Grove Church. Johnny was the last original founding member of the Possum Hollow Hunting Club and co-owned and operated Toole Low Grounds with his son, a long-time dream of his. When he wasn’t hunting, fishing or guiding hunts, he was helping others or working in his garden. He never met a stranger and enjoyed being with people or in the outdoors.
A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Sardis Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Dewberry and the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, May 14, 2021 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Parrish Funeral Home.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mary Rose Lancaster Toole; son, Brandon Frederick Toole and wife Crystal of Four Oaks; daughter, Emily Toole Brown and husband, Levy of Smithfield; brother, Bobby Eugene Toole and wife Elaine of Smithfield; sister, Phyllis Toole Joyner and husband George of Goldsboro; two grandchildren, Christian Alexander Toole and Lydia Rose Brown and beloved nieces and nephews.
