Lisa Ward Thomas passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 17, 2018 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. Born March 31, 1963 in Raleigh to Louis Vernon Ward and Mary Macon Ward, she was preceded in death by her father Vernon Ward and sister, Susan Ward.
Chronic illness walked in Lisa’s shadow her entire life but her inner strength and determination never let it have power over her or interfere with her goals. Lisa dedicated her adult life to education and literacy. After obtaining her degree from UNC-Wilmington, she earned a graduate degree in Counseling and Evaluation from East Carolina University. Lisa taught school in North Carolina, California and Florida. Lisa’s passion for education extended beyond the classroom. She was also a certified Phono-Graphix reading therapist and spent numerous evenings and weekends working with students to improve their reading skills. After leaving the classroom, Lisa obtained her Florida real estate license.
