Waverly Guy Willoughby

    Birth Date: 12/05/1937
    Deceased Date: 09/10/2020

On Wednesday, September 10, 2020, Waverly Guy Willoughby, husband of 63 years and father of three children, met his Savior Jesus at the age of 82.

Guy was born on December 5, 1937 in Wayne County, N.C. to Clyde Alice and John Ashley Willoughby. He retired from the metal fabrication business that carried him from the Virginia shipyards to the state of N.C. and finally to Northern Telecom. But it was his ministry as “Santa” that was most rewarding. He married his “Mrs. Claus”, Mavorine Oliver Willoughby in 1957 and they raised two daughters, JoAnn Willoughby Howell and Debbie Sue Willoughby Lancaster and one son, Timothy Wayne Willoughby.

Guy’s love for his Christ Jesus was matched by his love for his family. One of fifteen children, his life was simple and sometimes difficult, But one of his joys and talents was music, specifically singing. His love for music was a gift that he passed on to his church family as choir director for many years.

Since before 2000, Guy touched many lives, young and old in his “Santa Claus” persona. His calling card has a picture but no name or phone number. It instead conveys “Jesus loves you and so does Santa” and cites John 3:16 on the back. It was his love for Christ that he really wished to share with the children. But he still enjoyed the excitement or sometimes apprehension of the children, and he cherished every year. In a single Christmas season he gives away 1,500 candy canes.

Both Mr. and Mrs. “Claus” were most proud of their Grandchildren; Robert, Ben, Melissa, Joshua, Ryan, Aaron, and Katelyn, and Great Grandchildren; Nathan, Sydney, Jacob, Olivia, and Owen. They recently adopted a new “child”, a schnoodle named Dorey that gave Guy so much happiness.

The family appreciates all the love and support given and cherishes your prayers. A special thank you to our Community Hospice caregivers who guided our family through this journey with such loving care.
