WILSON’S MILLS – A heavily damaged Jeep was spotted by a passing Smithfield Police officer on his way to work Thursday morning. The SUV appeared to have overturned off the road and down an embankment near the intersection of US 70 and US 70 Business.
Wilson’s Mills firefighters and the Smithfield officer searched for a victim but were unable to locate anyone around the car.

The State Highway Patrol said the vehicle traveled over 400 feet off the roadway, sliding sideways into the underbrush and trees before overturning and coming to a stop.
Authorities don’t know when the crash occurred but believe it happened several hours before it was discovered.

Law enforcement officers are searching for the car’s registered owner.
