Plans Submitted For Smithfield Amazon Distribution Center?

Plans have been submitted for a massive building at the recently approved West Smithfield Industrial Park. Could this be a new Amazon distribution center rumored to be locating in Johnston County?

Construction plans have been submitted to Johnston County Building Inspections for a 629,186 square foot building, valued at $63,317,144, at the West Smithfield Industrial Park, located in the 2100 block of Highway 70 Business West near Barbour Road.

In January, the Smithfield Town Council approved plans for the 258-acre industrial park. During the meeting, Samet Corporation of Greensboro received approval to rezone six properties to Light Industrial for the future park site. Samet is the same company that recently submitted plans to Johnston County Building Inspections for review and approval.

In February, Johnston County Report first reported that Amazon was looking at the Industrial Park for a warehouse fulfillment center.

If Amazon does locate in Johnston County, it could be the first of several major companies to locate in the West Smithfield Industrial Park. An Amazon fulfillment center typically has 1,500 to 2,000 full-time employees with a minimum salary of $15 hour. In 2020, Amazon opened a distribution and fulfillment center in Garner.

Samet Corporation did not respond to our request for a comment on the building plans they recently submitted.
