Police: 2 Injured In Crash Caused By Impaired Driver

Two people were injured in a two car collision Friday night reportedly caused by a suspected 73 year-old drunk driver.

Smithfield Police and Johnston County EMS responded to the 10:48pm accident on Wilson’s Mills Road at Durwood Stephenson Highway.   Officers said a 2012 GMC SUV had stopped for a traffic light at the intersection when they were rear ended by a 2005 Toyota traveling at an estimated 45 miles per hour. Police said there were no skid marks prior to the impact.

The driver of the SUV, Abimael Martinez, 54, and a passenger, Hipolito Martinez Santos, 41, both of Cleveland Road, Smithfield were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The operator of the Toyota, James Ray Stewart, 73, of Cottonwood Drive, Clayton was not injured. He was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while impaired and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.   Police Chief Keith Powell said Stewart registered 0.09 on the breathalyzer, above the legal limit of 0.08.

Police estimated damage to the GMC at $2,000 and damage to the Toyota at $6,000.
