Police Catch Wal-Mart Purse Snatcher

A Four Oaks man is facing felony charges after he allegedly grabbed a woman’s purse inside Wal-Mart in Smithfield then fled.

Around 11:30am Tuesday, a 34 year-old Princeton woman said she was shopping inside the store and had placed her purse in a shopping cart.  Police allege a man walked by the victim, grabbed the purse from the cart, and ran towards the front door.  The victim and a Wal-Mart employee pursued the suspect on foot but he jumped into a car and sped away.

About 5 minutes later, Smithfield Police said they located a vehicle matching the description of the getaway car parked behind a shopping center on Venture Drive.  Police arrested 32 year-old Steven Daniel Smith of the 4200 block of Highway 96 South.   Officers recovered the victim’s wallet and debit card but her driver’s license and $113 in cash was not located.

Smith was placed in the Johnston County Jail under a $75,000 bond charged with felony larceny from the person and felony conspiracy to commit larceny from the person.
