Police Chief: Man Accidentally Shot Himself Twice In 3 Months

WILSON’S MILLS – For the second time in three months, a Wilson’s Mills man shot himself while cleaning a loaded handgun. On July 13, 2021, Wilson’s Mills police was dispatched to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton for a shooting that occurred at the victim’s residence in.

The injured man, identified as Daniel Aguilar, Jr., age 23, of Deer Flag Lane in Wilson’s Mills, told police he accidently shot himself in the left hand while cleaning his handgun. On October 10, 2021, officers were notified of another shooting at the same Deer Flag Lane address.

Police Chief A.Z. Williams said Aguilar, Jr. had once again injured himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the same left hand while cleaning his handgun. While both shootings were investigated and determined to be accidental, Aguilar was cited after the most recent incident.

“After the first incident, Mr. Aguilar was counseled on proper handgun cleaning and safety procedures. Although negligent, accidents sometime do happen. However, my concern now is that this young man could end up killing himself, a neighbor or some nearby party. He obviously did not learn the first time,” Chief Williams told The Johnston County Report.

Aguilar was charged with Discharging a Firearm in City Limits.

  1. He shouldn’t be allowed to own a handgun. Obviously he doesn’t have the capacity to retain information or training in safe firearm handling.
