Police: Drunk Driving Suspect Injures Two People In Crash

Smithfield Police arrested a drunk driving suspect after responding to a two vehicle accident at 8:30pm Monday on Brightleaf Boulevard at M. Durwood Stephenson Highway. 

According to an accident report,  Melvin Romeo Caretto Arreaga, 40, of Smithfield was traveling northbound on Brightleaf Boulevard in a 2004 GMC SUV and failed to stop for a 2006 Jeep SUV stopped for a red light at the intersection.

The GMC ran into the back of the Jeep while traveling at an estimated 25 mph. Arreaga and a juvenile passenger in the GMC were not injured.

However, the driver of the Jeep, Latasha Ellen Owen, 44, of Selma and a juvenile passenger were transported to Johnston Health in Smithfield for treatment of injuries.

Arreaga was arrested at the scene and charged with driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, and misdemeanor child abuse.  Police said he registered 0.22 on the Breathalyzer, nearly three times above the legal limit of 0.08. 

Arreaga was held on a $10,000 bond at the Johnston County Jail.
