Police: Impaired Driver With Children In Car Causes 3 Vehicle Crash

Smithfield Police have filed DWI and child abuse charges against a woman they said caused a three vehicle accident on Brightleaf Boulevard at Market Street (Highway 301 at Highway 70).

Police said 27 year-old Mariah Gail Sharo of Broadway Street, Smithfield was traveling northbound on Brightleaf Blvd. on June 5th around 3:30pm when her 2004 Buick SUV ran into the back of a 2011 Jeep SUV stopped at the intersection for a red light. The Jeep, driven by Giny Sarahi Arevalo-Bonill, 21, of Selma, was then pushed forward into a 1998 Ford truck being driven by Jacob Aaron Vanvalkenburg, 23, of Princeton.

According to an accident report, Sharo was traveling at 35MPH when she struck the stationary Jeep from behind.

Police said Sharo had two children, ages 3 and 8, in her SUV. One was her child. The other was a friend’s child.

Sharo refused to submit to a Breathalyzer test. Police obtained a search warrant and obtained a blood sample.

Sharo was charged with driving while impaired and two counts of misdemeanor child abuse.  She was released from jail on a $1,000 bond pending a July 31st court date.

No injuries were reported in the collision.

Damage to the Buick was estimated at $6,000. Damage to the Jeep was placed at $4,000 and damage to the Ford was approximately $1,000.
